Field Trip Fun - Living Planet Aquarium

For this week's field trip, we decided to head to The Living Planet Aquarium. It was a last minute decision, so just before we left, I did a quick search online to find somewhere to eat.  I have to say, it's harder than I thought it would be to find somewhere for us to eat.  I need somewhere pretty casual, because when it's just the kids and I, I never know how it's going to go. Plus, they are both pretty picky with what they will eat, so I want to make sure that we find somewhere that has something for them to eat.

So after a quick search, I came across the Black Bear Diner.  Technically, this isn't somewhere that I would have normally chosen, because I really do want to find local restaurants - and this is a franchise.  But hey - I was searching quickly, and this is what I came to.  It ended up being further away than I thought it was going to be, but since I didn't have anywhere else in mind, we went with it.

The food was decent.  Abbi and Easton shared a grilled cheese and fries.  Abbi would only eat the fries, and Easton would only eat the grilled cheese, so it totally worked out.  I got a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich, that was HUGE.  I only made it through about half of it.  For the side, I got onion rings, that were clearly not made in house.  But over all, it was decent.  Nothing spectacular, but better than some of the other places we've been!

And Abbi loved all of the bears everywhere, and even let me take her picture!

Then it was off to the aquarium  This was the first time I had been, even though I've wanted to go for years now.

Of course, I walk in and pull out my camera, only to discover that it was completely dead.  So dead that the battery signal wasn't even flashing like it normally does when it runs out.  I had a moment of panic, thinking that my camera had died.  (Luckily, when I got home and charged the battery, it worked just fine!)  So please excuse the horrible iPhone pics.  But they are better than nothing!

I was actually surprised how much Abbi loved this.  She wanted to run from one thing to the next and I think would have stayed for hours and hours if I would have let her!

I loved watching the otters.  When  we first got there, only one of them was awake, but he was kind of cool to watch while he was swimming around!

So many cool things to see.  I LOVED the jellyfish!

Easton wanted out of the stroller the whole time, and wanted to climb up onto all of the steps.  I think we have a climber on our hands!

Abbi was fascinated with watching the sting rays, although she wouldn't touch them.  But she kept wanting to go back to see them, and talked about them the entire way home!

We also loved the penguin exhibit.  Those little guys are so much fun to watch!  It was definitely the most crowded, but we were still able to watch them for quite awhile.  It seemed like they were having so much fun in there!

It was a really fun day.  My only complaint is that it's a little expensive for the size of the aquarium, but it was still fun to go.  There were a lot of really cool things to see.  And we probably would have stayed a little longer, but a bunch of kids on a field trip showed up, and I didn't want to fight my way through them with a stroller and Abbi.  But we had a great time!

I took some video of the otters and penguins, and instead of having it just sit on my computer like it normally does, I decided to throw them, (plus the above pictures) into a little video.  I really need to start doing this more often so the video doesn't just get lost!!

16 Weeks

Lily Pad

A little while back, when the kids were bored and looking for something to do, Josh took one of the couch cushions off and told them it was a lily pad for them to play on.  We had no idea what he was starting that day!!

Now - every. single. day. - they want to play on the lily pads.  Especially Easton.  In fact, Easton loves it so much that he even tried to pull the cushions off of the couch at church!!  I don't really love having my couch cushions on the floor all day, and the kids jumping all over the couch, but it sure does keep them occupied!!

Field Trip Fun - Bingham Canyon Mine

For this week's field trip,we met up with Janell again.  We had free tickets to get into the Bingham Canyon Mine, (which I always call Kennecott, but I guess the official name of the mine is the Bingham Canyon Mine), so we decided to check it out.

Instead of trying out a place to eat, we decided to go to a park and have a picnic and let the kids play.  There is a park up the street from my house, and not too far from the mine, so we decided to meet there
Just our luck, right as we were walking into the park, 2 school busses full of kids pull up.  So we definitely didn't have the park to ourselves, but the kids didn't seem to mind at all!!

So, we've been striking out on the places that we've been to eat on our field trips, so go figure that the first good meal that we had on a field trip is one that we brought from home!!  Abbi, Easton and I enjoyed BLT Chicken Ranch Wraps, applesauce and homemade chocolate chip cookies.  Well, at least I enjoyed it. I think the kids were more interested in just playing.  (and eating cookies.  Oh well...)

Once another school bus pulled up with another load of kids, we decided it was time to head to the mine.  We piled into our cars and drove down to the mine.  You have to check in at a gate, and then drive up the mountain.  It's kind of crazy to see just how much they do there, and how huge the place really is.

Once you get to the visitor's section, there is a museum that you can go through.  It's pretty small, but full of all kinds of things.
I was actually surprised to see how interested the kids were - we spent quite a bit of time in there!

Then we headed outside where you can stand and look over at the mine where they are working.  Pictures seriously don't do this justice with how big it really is.  It's amazing that they've done all of this in a mountain!

I guess these trucks are as big as a 2 story house.  I wish we could have seen one of them up close!!

We spent a little bit of time outside looking at the mine and the old mining equipment.  And of course checking out the big tire!!
After, we went in to see the gift shop, and the kids had fun looking at the rocks, stuffed animals, and everything else they had.  Then Janell followed us home so she could see where we live, and the kids had fun playing in Abbi's (very messy) room while Janell and I chatted.  It was a fun field trip day!!

Field Trip Fun - Ice Cream!

Ok, so this week's field trip was kind of cheating, but we did go do something!  I was leaving town for a blogging event, and was short on time.  And I needed shoes.  So we went shopping one day, and stopped and got ice cream at Dairy Queen.  It's better than nothing, though - and Abbi still had fun!

Field Trip Fun - Bridal Veil Falls

It's time for another field trip!!  Janell and I had both bought Groupons to The Awful Waffle, so we decided to make it a day and have lunch then head up the canyon to Bridal Veil Falls.

Unfortunately, it was another strike out for new restaurants. The first strike was that there is basically no parking.  This place is definitely made for students just walking there, because there was one parking spot taken by what I'm assuming was the 1 employee working, I had another, and we had to move tables out of the way to make room for Janell to park.  And if you know how parking is down by BYU, you know that there is basically no parking anywhere.

We were already turned off, but then we saw the sign that said that the Groupons, (which were basically 2 for 1) were only for dessert crepes, and not savory, and not waffles.  We each had a Groupon, so that was 4 desserts between our 2 little families.  And then we had to buy lunch separate.  I was super frustrated that they didn't say that on the Groupon, or when you bought the Groupon, otherwise I would have never bought it.

We each got an order of frites, plus a bbq pork (I think??) crepe.  The frites were good, but not what I think of as authentic frites from Belgium.  The crepe was ok after the first bite, but a couple of bites in, I didn't like it.  It was way too sweet.  The kids would only eat the crepe - not the filling.  But at least they liked the frites!

And honestly, I can't even remember what flavor of crepes I got.  I think this was banana and cookie butter (aka Biscoff), or maybe it was caramel.  I can't even remember.  They were ok, but we didn't even finish both of them.  Strike out, but at least that's one restaurant on my list I can check out!!

After lunch, we headed up to Bridal Veil falls.  It had been awhile since I had been there - it's so beautiful!!

We parked at the south end and took the trail up.  I know Abbi just enjoyed being outside!  (and spending time with her cousins.  I love watching her play with Asher!)

We got up to the falls, and I quickly learned that we should have brough flip flops and swimming suits.  The kids got soaked, but they had fun.  So that's what matters, right??

It was a fun day, and both of the kids were worn out when we were finished!
