Book #1 - Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights
Emily Bronte
Blurb: "Wuthering Heights", Emily Bronte's only novel, is one of the pinnacles of 19th-century English literature. It's the story of Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with a girl above his class, loses her, and devotes the rest of his life to wreaking revenge on her family. (from Goodreads)
Opening Sentence: "1801 - I have just returned from a visit to my landlord - the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with."
Length: Medium - 370 pages
Notes: My first off of the list for the year! I wanted to love this book - I really did. I'll admit that it took me a little while to get into it - just because the language is different, and I had to concentrate a lot more than I normally do! The story was fine, it was the characters that were just so unlikeable. I don't think there was one character that I felt for or liked in the least bit. I found them all so negative and complaining and always just wanting what they didn't have. What a sad way to live life! I know it's supposed to be a love story, but it's not a very happy love story. I think that if I liked tortured love stories, I would have liked this better...
Random quote : "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same."
Recommend: yes - just because it is a classic. But don't go into it expecting a grand love story!

I've never read this but have wanted to for your same reasons. I'm reading a book right now called "I, Elizabeth" and it has the same issue with the language...but I'm into it now and want to keep reading.
